On the occasion of the Statehood Day, a reception attended by a large number of guests was held at the Embassy of the Republic of Serbia in London. Along with the representatives of the FCDO, the House of Lords, MPs, UK state institutions, international organizations and the diplomatic corps, the gathering was attended by prominent representatives of the diaspora, as well as members of the academic and cultural community in London. After the anthems of the Republic of Serbia and the United Kingdom were played, Ambassador Aleksandra Joksimović addressed the audience.
Noting that there were no gatherings at the Embassy on the occasion of the Statehood Day in the previous two years due to the restrictive measures caused by the corona virus pandemic, the Ambassador expressed hope that the most difficult period was over and that life would finally return to normal. With gratitude for the support of the British government to the Republic of Serbia during the pandemic, H.E. Joksimović introduced to the audience scientists of Serbian origin who were involved in the research of COVID19 vaccines. Recalling the alliance of Serbia and the United Kingdom during both world wars and the rich common history, this year marks the 185th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations.
The Ambassador noted with satisfaction that, despite COVID, high-level cooperation continued, confirmed by the signing of the Partnership, Trade and Cooperation Agreement between the Republic of Serbia and the United Kingdom, realization of bilateral consultations in the field of security and defense policy, first visit of the British Minister of Defense to Serbia and other realized activities.
On behalf of the British Government, the guests were greeted by Head of the Diplomatic Corps Alistair Harrison, expressing the expectation that the excellent bilateral cooperation would continue to develop and improve in the period ahead. The two sides will continue to engage in all fields of common interest, in which the Embassy of the Republic of Serbia in London and the UK Embassy in Belgrade have a significant role. During the reception, the guests were shown video material of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Serbia on the occasion of the Statehood Day.
